The autumn leaves are like a golden carpet

We love the swishing sound they make when we kick them and throw them around.

We are going onto the nature trail to look for skeleton leaves.

We really like the nature trail!

There are tall trees on the nature trail. Their leaves have all fallen onto the ground.

The nature trail is like being in the bush. We walk carefully along the path.

The leaves are very beautiful, but we can't find many skeleton leaves.

The kamar is the same colours as the leaves. She is camouflaged!

Peter and Bella - the wheat-head people

 We made two new members for our class. They are made from wheat and sphagnum moss inside old stockings. Their names are Peter and Bella. Bella has pink eye-shadow and Peter has blue.

 We watered them every day and watched their hair grow. ....

 Peter has three bristly green hairs on his forehead!

 Bella's hair is growing faster than Peter's.

We put Peter into a smaller glass because his moss wasn't wet enough.

 Now he's catching up. 

 Bella has a beard! They are the roots of the wheat grains.

We had to put holes in the stockings because Bella was getting ingrown hair!

Autumn time!

Room 5 is loving Autumn time and even though it is getting cold, it means we can have fun with the leaves!  We have used the leaves in our school to do lots of counting forwards and backwards.  We have also used them to do some sketching.  Our favourite thing to do with the leaves was play in them!!  We were so patient when we sat and talked about leaves changing colours, but then look what happened!

Step 2- Touching the leaves and feeling them crunch between our fingers.

Step 3- Throwing the leaves and watching them fall and tumble down.  It's raining leaves!

What a fun time we had.

What Room 5 already knows about 'changes'.

This term we are learning about Changing State.  We have made a thinking chart about all the things we can think of that change in some way.

We talked more about the way the leaves change in the Autumn time. We even got to play in the leaves. Then we started talking about how the seasons change from warm to cold.

Ms Jones helped us to make a collage of the different changes that happen between the warm and cold seasons.  Here are some of the changes that we see.

We have learnt about 2 new words today:

Liquid and Solid.  Here are some things that are liquid and solid.  Miss Lee made some jelly to show us  how a liquid can change into a solid.  We went to the staffroom kitchen and got to watch.  When Miss Lee finished mixing the jelly crystals with hot water, she put it in the fridge.  When we take it out in the morning, we hope it has turned into solid jelly!

We wonder what it will look and taste like!

We can count forwards to and backwards from 10!

We decided we needed to put some big numbers up in Room 5 to help us with our counting.

We were really tricky and mixed our numbers up.

We made groups to show how many for each number.

Dugan helped us to put our big numbers up on the wall.

He got up really high on the ladder.

We helped Dugan count and put the numbers up in the right order.

We can count to 10!!

Taniwha

We have being reading the story 'Taniwha' written by Robyn Kahukiwa.

We visited the Museum in Hamilton and got to see some more Taniwha's.  There is a picture of a Taniwha on our Gateway at Hamilton East School, it looks like the one we saw in the book.

Room 5's Story Teller

We like to read to our friends.  We read our book with Miss Lee, take our books home and read them to our parents/whanau, and then if we have learn't our story really well.... we get to read it to the class :)

Here is Ilaria having her turn to read to the class.  We are super listeners to our story teller.
