Role model dress up day for Kids Can fundraiser.

What a super fun day !!!

We had police officers, doctors, scientists, singers, football stars, construction workers, adventurers and more.  Today gave us a great chance to talk about role models and what they mean to us.

Thank you everyone who got dressed up and into role, to support Kids Can.

Hot Air Balloons

Our pūtaiao (science) focus this week was on Hot Air Balloons.

We completed two experiments showing how gas inflates a balloon.

The first one we tried shows how hot water heats air in a bottle which rises to inflate a balloon.

And the second was using baking soda and vinegar.

A few of our experiments did not work out how we expected. We discussed this and talked about what we could do again to make them successful.

Pumpkin Art and Chips

For a few weeks now Room 6 have hosted a giant pumpkin from our School kitchen garden.

We have sketched it and created some beautiful art using Indian ink and dye.  To celebrate its last day with us we made pumpkin chips for a Friday treat.

We got to look inside the pumpkin at all the different parts and tried to get the pumpkin seeds from their kernels.

Unfortunately the chips weren't very tasty but most of the children gave them a try.

Marae trip

 Ata mārie !!!

What a great morning we had at Hukanui marae on Monday.

Special thank you to the helpers who could make the trip with us.

Firstly we were welcomed with a powhiri and we sang a song called E hara in response.  Then we got to sit inside the wharenui and look at all the beautiful tukutuku pannels.  The kaumatua told us lots of stories about Hukanui.

Next we ate morning tea and sketched kowhaiwhai patterns on the gateway.

After a run around and a fantastic kapahaka performance from our school we took the bus ride back to school which is always a big highlight (for the kids).

Waiting outside to be called through.

Patterns galore.

This week we explored making patterns.

We asked, "what makes a pattern?".

Answer... "repeat, repeat, repeat".

We can make patterns out of anything!  Go Room 6.

Counting Cars.

We learnt about making a tally chart this week and how it can help us record information.

Together with a partner, we made our own tally chart and found out what vehicles go past our school between 9:20-9:30am.

Some children collected information about the colours of cars, and some found out what types of vehicles go past.

Great counting and recording!

Pangarau ~ Statistics - gather, record, interpret.

For the first part of this term, we are focusing on the Statistics Maths strand.  We are learning to gather and collect data/information, record it and interpret it.

This has helped us to find out lots of things about the learners in Room 6.

How does Room 6 come to school....???

What pets do Room 6 have...???

What shoes do Room 6 children wear.....???
